Help Poetry Mags in this Recession

February 6, 2009

We all know by now that the economy stinks. As Reb Livingston points out her blog post — see excerpt below — the only organizations and publications that will survive this economic decline are the ones that have low overhead and can figure out how to make do with less.

Even though the economy stinks, we’re still offering you a FREE issue when you subscribe.

I never appreciated my grandmother and parents having lived through all or part of the Depression. However, I’m grateful now. They never stopped living like it was the Depression. My grandmother could make a penny scream for mercy. That period of time, and the resulting lack of money, was always in the background warning them to be careful with spending. Those lessons filtered down to me, and I do the best I can with them.

However, we do still need your help and your support. Subscribe because you like poetry. Subscribe because you want to help a magazine continue. Ask your university library to subscribe; they often will listen to the requests of grad students and professors. That request would cost you nothing and help us a great deal.

And, as Reb Livingston says:

If there’s a print magazine that you really love and would hate to see go away, subscribe to it. If you’re already subscribed to it, get a subscription for a friend. Ask your library to get a subscription. If you can afford to buy books, now is the time to buy them, especially from small presses. If you teach, incorporate more small press titles into your reading lists. Review and talk about books you love to help get the word out. Small gestures like this do make a difference to small presses and magazines. Reb Livingston, from her blog
