To end with a bit of fun, imagine this: You’re on an AWP conference cruise when suddenly, there’s a mutiny. Before stranding you on a deserted island, Captain Billy “Bluebeard” Collins lets you choose three books and a month supply of your favorite alcoholic beverage to bring with you. What would your choices be?

Well, the beverage of choice is scotch; that’s easy. Maybe an 18 year Macallan. As for the books, that is a bit more difficult…hmmm. Shouldn’t I be taking an encyclopedia or a Worst-Case-Scenario survival guide? I’ll take Brittanica A-Z; both for the information and for the pages to start fires with in a pinch. D’Aulaire’s book of Greek myths, because I love the illustrations. And Nick Flynn’s Some Ether, because reading it always makes me want to write. Though I suppose, if the Britannica leaves no room for pens or blank paper, that would be the worst torture of all.
