I feel a strong connection with this text. A few weeks ago, I introduced a unit of poetry to a class of eighth graders. I read from Lawrence Ferlinghetti's What is Poetry. At the same time, a few years prior, I was asked what my passion was. I answered, "Poetry." It's strange to think how confident I was in my one word response because, since then, I have felt that hesitance, the shame I suppose, of such a desire to write and do nothing else. The struggle of understanding and justifying what poetry is and why it's written does not seem to let up. I admire your persistence. For your ability to convey what poetry is with poetry, I am thankful.
