Pleasures of Writing

This and that happened, and it’s been a while since I wrote. That’s all right, because I needed time to recharge. Trips to Michigan and Florida and New York and lots of time with the family and our friends took the place of my writing time. Out of nowhere this week, two poems arrived. I know that this is hardly exciting news for anyone but myself. It was the pleasure of creating that I wanted to mention here. Surely, you’ve felt the same when writing your own poems (or doing whatever creative activity you do). I wrote the poem draft and let it sit a day. When I went back, I could see what needed to happen. The poem needed to end sooner. It had to start a different way. It needed a new title. I enjoyed the quiet process of editing, of seeming to carve the words the way a sculptor carves wood or stone.
