Free Poetry Books: 2010 Giveaway

by 32poems on April 3, 2010

Please visit the 2011 giveaway page.

Karen Maezen Miller and Kelli Russell Agodon gave me the idea to give away TWO books in celebration of National Poetry Month.

It’s hard to give away books I like. That’s part of the reason I want to do it.

The Skinny on the Free Book Giveaway

I will pack up the book and send it to you at no charge. There will be two winners — one for each book. Leave your name in the comments. I will pick winners at random.

For the “book by someone else part,” I am giving away Pablo Neruda’s Twenty Love Poems and a Song of Despair translated by W.S. Merwin. This particular edition includes drawings (possibly ink and charcoal) of women every few pages between the poems. The small book will probably make you happy.

Verse collection by Pablo Neruda, published in 1924 as Veinte poemas de amor y una cancion desesperada. The book immediately established the author’s reputation and became one of the most widely read collections of poetry written in Spanish. The 20 love poems of the title poignantly describe remembered affairs with two women: a girl from the poet’s native town of Temuco and a classmate at the University of Santiago. The collection begins with intensity, describing sensual passion that slackens into melancholy and detachment in the later verses. The closing poem, “A Song of Despair,” hopelessly dwells upon bitter emotions. — The Merriam-Webster Encyclopedia of Literature

The second book is my own Midnight Voices. I will sign it for you and send it to you for Zero Dollars.

Hi. I love this idea and I think it is most generous of you. I want to thank you for all the attention you gave my manuscript as part of your workshops which I want everyone to be aware of and to sign up for! If I “win”, I would love to read the books of course and then put them into circulation for many to read either at my college (Gordon) or in the state’s libray system for all to love and read and cherish. (Pine)

Nessa McCasey April 1, 2011 at 9:57 pm

I am always loving poetry books. So I’d be honored to receive either of your gifted books… I am a poetry therapist, so I am always looking for new poems that I can share with others in my workshops/sessions. What a lovely idea for poetry month. And I wish you well in all you do!!

with poetic care,
Nessa

Well, the more poetry, the more distracting, hilarious, elegant, illuminating ,evocative,hope-tinged
well versed communications available to us,the better!
I’m hip deep in the Sorrows: war, unemployment, tsunami deaths, hate speech,
and radiations fears….fears for Japan entire. Up with books, and poetry, and gifts of spirit.
We don’t need a Happy News newspaper…..We do need something substantive to read and share.I just finished spreading 5 of the six copies of POETRY magazine I was sent
for April all around, to
places in my city that one would least expect to find such fare.
My dentist, the shoe repair shop, the
local Worksource(unemployed Hopeland) and other such sites now have April’s edition of POETRY, instead of old editions of dated tabloids, crinkled remains of USA TODAY and
flyers for -things- not – needed. My beloved friend and mentor, Bill Stafford wrote in:

“For My Young Friends Who Are Afraid”

“what you fear will not go away;it will take you into yourself and bless you and keep you. That’s the world, and we all live there.”

Susan Rich April 13, 2011 at 9:33 am

Would love to be included!

Jenny May 12, 2011 at 6:29 pm

natalie September 9, 2011 at 2:34 pm

i had two of my books published last year and am a member of a poetry site called dark poetry where i now post my latest works.

Barbara Wagner September 19, 2011 at 3:05 pm
